The best bilingual dictionary of proverbs, sayings, saws and adages, English-Spanish, Spanish-English. This Dictinary will help you understand Spanis Culture as reflected in its proverbs. To know and master the Spanish language and culture through proverbs. Cross-references to help the search.

Many “dictionaries of proverbs” try to be something they are not. They have flashy pictures or “cutesy” illustrations that try to explain a proverb. This text has neither. It is exactly what it purports to be, a dictionary, including approximately 2,500 proverbs in English and Spanish. It has the look and feel of a dictionary, and few bells or whistles. The proverbs included range from archaic biblical proverbs such as “He who blames would buy” (23) and literary citations such as “He who has lost his credit is dead to the world” (38) (which the author links to a passage in Shakespeare) to more current and well-known proverbs such as “Strike while the iron is hot” (99). When possible, the author has given a reference, either to the literary source, for example, the Bible, or to the original text, often in Latin or another ancient or modern language. The amount of information contained in this volume and the diversity of the proverbs included are impressive. I could not think of a proverb that was not included.
This text would seem to be a useful tool for a literature class. Many expressions do not translate well because they are indeed proverbs and therefore defy a literal translation. Students often struggle to make sense of proverbs since they are not sure how to relate to them. A student could use this dictionary of proverbs when confronted with an expression that does not seem to make sense when taken at face value. Since the proverbs are listed alphabetically, they are easy to locate and the proverbs that have two main “topics” are listed under both topics and cross-referenced. For example “Stolen waters are sweet” is listed under “water” but also referenced under “sweet,” making it easy for a language student to locate the proverb by checking either topic in the index.
Students could also use this dictionary to include a proverb in their writing assignments. Since many of the proverbs are explained (and not just translated), students will feel confident enough to use them when they feel the urge. For example, “Don’t wash your dirty linen in public” is translated “La ropa sucia se debe lava en casa” (189) but also explained further: “No hay que sacar los trapos sucios a relucir y debemos arreglar nuestros problemas en privado y no dar tres cuartos al pregonero.” The same method of presentation is used in the English portion of the text. I could see this approach being very useful in a creative writing class, in which adding a proverb to the dialogue of a character would add depth and show another level of cultural and linguistic competency.
The Dictionary of Proverbs is best used by students at the advanced levels of language study. Beginners would not often find this type of expression in the texts they are exposed to, as most textbook series avoid proverbs because of the difficulty in understanding their more subtle or cultural meanings. Although many proverbs appear obscure today and are seldom used, they do appear in literary works and their inclusion in this text therefore seems most appropriate. Overall, this is a complete and well-organized dictionary of proverbs that should appeal to teachers and students at the intermediate level and above who are interested in a user-friendly tool to aid in better understanding proverbs in English and Spanish.
